Cell Mass is a gallery adaptation of the public artwork, Spine, projected on a large-scale with surround-sound, creating an immersive experience for the viewer.

 

Developed from material filmed for the artist’s award-winning audio-visual work Nascent, Cell Mass N2 takes raw footage of improvised and choreographed performance by Australian Dance Theatre, to which digital compositional techniques were applied in the editing stage. The result is an intense and immersive hybrid of visual art, experimental media, technology and dance.

 

The imagery of Cell Mass N2 evolves and distorts, from complex masses of cell-like structures, to graceful friezes of bodies whose movement is interwoven in time, creating tableaux both breathtaking in beauty and rich in texture. Eventually, the entwined bodies resemble a new life form, resembling a biological sample, in flux, multiplying, mutating…
