i TOO
Harnessing imaging and visualisation software at the forefront of our understanding of vision and cognition, I TOO is a twin screen looped projection installation made from the source material images of I. This was my response to some of the most challenging discoveries we can make about ourselves and the role that vision plays in our experience and appreciation of the world around us.
Looking into someone’s eyes and physical presence can tell us so much about the person. Modern scientific observation of the eye is now part of the diagnostic process, enabling the early detection of many illnesses, soon to be self-detection through retinal scanning apps. In I, Gina explores the gap between vision and fact, data and knowledge, seeing and knowing.
I was made in 2014, an interactive installation using an iris scanning interface which was the same technology used in airports. It recognises the pattern of your iris which is, allegedly, the most accurate non-invasive identification for international security. I was commissioned for Lumiere in Durham and due to the scale it has rarely been shown. I TOO is a way to communicate at least some of the ideas on a more accessible format. I TOO was commissioned by Queensland University of Technology for Femel Fissions 2016.
